Introducing the Europe-LAND Toolbox, A New Digital Platform for Sustainable Land Use

We’re excited to share the release of our latest video, “Developing a Digital Toolbox for Sustainable Land-Use and Land Management”, now available on our new YouTube channel. This short video provides the first public look at the Europe-LAND Toolbox, an innovative Web-GIS platform currently in development.

The Toolbox is designed to support evidence-based decision-making by linking spatial data to climate and biodiversity considerations. Whether you’re a policymaker, researcher, planner, or community stakeholder, this platform will empower you to better understand how land-use decisions, from the past and present, can shape future landscapes.

Led by our partners at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) under WP 6, the Toolbox brings together a wide range of geospatial datasets from trusted sources like Copernicus, CORINE, the European Environment Agency (EEA), and Eurostat. Users can explore dynamic land-use scenarios, assess the environmental impacts of different strategies, and even upload their own data for customized analysis.

But the platform isn’t just about data, its about participatory design: it was built with the needs of real-world users in mind and continues to evolve through ongoing feedback from across Europe. It also integrates key outputs from the broader Europe-LAND project, serving as a central hub for visualizing research findings and facilitating collaborative planning processes.

The Toolbox is intuitive and accessible, featuring:

  • Customizable GIS tools for scenario-building and land-use simulation
  • Stakeholder engagement features, including serious games to explore policy trade-offs
  • Open access datasets with options for user-uploaded files
  • Machine-learning-ready data for advanced research applications
  • Training modules and capacity-building resources to support users at all levels

This is just the beginning. Future updates will expand the platform’s thematic coverage, improve usability, and introduce new interactive features based on stakeholder feedback. The Europe-LAND Toolbox aims to become a go-to resource for anyone involved in shaping more sustainable and climate-resilient land management strategies across Europe.
