We are excited to announce the recent publishing of the latest paper developed within and supported by the Europe-LAND project. On February 28, 2025, the Journal of Maps published Dr. Lucie Kupková and Zdeněk Boudný’s article, “Landscape transformation in Czechia over the last 30 years: diversity of changes on two spatial levels.” The authors are both in the Faculty of Science and Department of Applied Geoinformatics and Cartography at Charles University in Prague, one of our partner universities.
The study examines landscape transformations in Czechia over the past 30 years, focusing on changes occurring after the fall of communism. It highlights a shift from uniform, large-scale land conversions during the socialist era to a more diverse range, not limited to afforestation, land reclamation, and sustainable agricultural practices, alongside ongoing threats from urbanization and suburbanization. Using national-scale cartograms and detailed case studies, the research maps these transformations, providing insights into the evolving relationship between human activities and land use
The findings of this study not only support Europe-LANDs work but provides critical insights into land-use changes and urbanization for urban planners and policy makers, environmental scientists, agricultural experts, historians, and social scientists, among others.
