A recent study published<\/a> by Europe-LAND partners at the University of Latvia presents a systematic review of European Union forest research conducted between 2000 and 2025, identifying significant imbalances that may constrain the effectiveness of forest-related policy and governance. Published in Frontiers in Forests and Global Change<\/a><\/em> earlier this month, the review draws on a dataset of over 3,100 peer-reviewed publications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The four authors applied the PESTEL analytical framework, applying Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental, and Legal dimensions to assess the thematic distribution of research over time. The results reveal a pronounced concentration of research within environmental and technological domains, particularly in areas such as ecological monitoring, modeling, and forest resource assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In contrast, the study found that political and legal dimensions are comparatively underrepresented. This gap undermines the critical role that governance structures, regulatory instruments, and institutional dynamics play in shaping forest management outcomes and policy implementation within the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authors argue that this imbalance may contribute to a misalignment between scientific knowledge production and policy needs. While existing research provides thorough insights into ecological processes and technological solutions, it may insufficiently account for the complexities of decision-making environments, including regulatory constraints, stakeholder interactions, and enforcement mechanisms. As a result, there is a risk that proposed solutions are evaluated primarily in terms of environmental feasibility, without adequate consideration of political viability or legal applicability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By identifying these gaps, the study<\/a> provides a foundation for rebalancing future research priorities and strengthening the interface between science and policy.
